Dr. Lars Schernikau, a shareholder in the German-listed commodity company HMS Bergbau Group, stated at the FFF Carbon 2024 Middelburg Coal Conference in Mpumalanga on October 17 that the current approach to the energy transition—focused on large-scale wind and solar development to replace oil, coal, and gas—may be one of humanity’s biggest mistakes.
“It’s a very uncomfortable and unpopular statement to make,” Dr Schernikau acknowledged, emphasizing the many challenges often overlooked in the current energy transition.
“This doesn’t mean that every wind turbine or solar panel is inherently bad,” he clarified, while addressing several major concerns with large-scale wind and solar power, beginning with the issue of energy density.
