At the Africa Gas Forum in Cape Town, Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources Gwede Mantashe stated that South Africa is sufficiently well-endowed with gas resources to completely avoid the anticipated “gas cliff” if it prioritises exploration and exploitation. Speaking on Thursday morning at the event, which is held alongside the Africa Energy Indaba, Mantashe provided a counter-view to previous warnings by Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa. Ramokgopa had described an imminent cliff and detailed plans involving Sasol and Eskom to import gas from Qatar. Mantashe, however, argues that the projected 2028 cliff is based on a faulty assumption of a lack of discoveries.
