Securing the nation’s energy supply and tackling energy poverty are key priorities for the South African government, Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe stated during his official welcome address at the Africa Oil Week 2024 conference, held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on Tuesday.
The country requires a diverse energy supply, and the government is committed to maintaining a balanced mix of energy sources,” he affirmed, emphasizing that energy security is “fundamental.”
He noted that in recent years, petroleum and gas have taken a backseat in South Africa’s energy landscape, with the primary focus being on renewable energy.
However, with the recent separation of the electricity sector from his department, the significance of petroleum for the country’s future is becoming more evident. South Africa has developed a national petroleum plan and drafted a Petroleum Bill, which is still awaiting final parliamentary approval.
